Foods That You Should Eat To Beat The Heat This Summer

By  |

With mercury levels reaching a new high everyday, staying cool becomes a difficult challenge to meet. Summer is that time of the year when you start reaching for ice cubes, ice creams and you air conditioner’s remote.

Such climatic conditions trigger dehydration and we look for ways to cool ourselves. Our body needs cooling foods that balance our diet and keep our energy levels stable.

Here are some foods that can help you stay cool during nasty Indian summers.

1. Coconut Water

Nothing beats our good ol’ nariyal paani. Filled with fiber, natural enzymes, iron, sodium, potassium and phosphorous, coconut water is the perfect heat buster.

2. Cucumber

Cucumbers are incredibly hydrating and staying adequately hydrated during summer is crucial. Also, cucumber cuts down a lot of health issues like diabetes and heart aliments. It also improves your bone and skin quality. They don’t ask you to stay as cool as a cucumber for nothing!

3. Watermelon

When you think of summer, you think of watermelon. Rich in lycopene and antioxidants, it keeps heat strokes at bay. But we are in no way suggesting you to buy the chopped watermelon slices sold by roadside vendors. In fact, they should never be consumed if you want to avoid the risk of a diarrhoea infection.

4. Curd

Dahi or curd is a natural coolant and most lactose intolerant people can also have it. Curd is the best source of probiotics, vitamins B12 and D. You can add fruits to curd to make a lip-smacking dessert or prepare dips during the summer season.

5. Tamarind

Doesn’t the mere mention of tamarind make your mouth water? It will not only keep your summer spirit alive, but also keep you healthy and hydrated. This summer instead of going the soda way, quench your thirst with the Desi Imli Ka Paani.

6. Onions

Onions protect you against sunstroke. Yes, we get it, raw onions are not pleasant to eat. Here is what you can do, you can apply onion juice on the chest to reduce body temperature. Onion juice also reduces inflammation caused by burns.

7. Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek or Methi seeds are very beneficial for health. It is one of the most ideal remedies to counter high body heat. You can also chew on some soaked fenugreek seeds to bring down body heat or you can crush the soaked seeds and apply it on your head as a hair mask for an ultimate cooling effect.

8. Cold Milk

Drink refrigerated milk frequently to reduce heat inside your body but make sure that it isn’t very cold. You can add two teaspoon of honey and drink early in the morning to stay away from heat production in the body.

9. Shikanji

Shikanji or lemonade is the drink you must consume during the summer season. Squeeze a few drops of lemon, add salt and sugar, soda if you please and enjoy the country’s favorite thirst quencher.

10. Chili Pepper

Have you ever wondered why cultures in the hottest locations on earth eat hot and spicy foods? Spicy foods make you sweat, which in turn helps you cool down faster. Though you may be inclined to cool down with a tall glass of iced tea, ice cream or watermelon on a sweltering summer’s day, the effect isn’t lasting. That is because your internal temperature is cooled too rapidly, and your body ends up compensating by raising your temperature. Chili pepper raises your body’s internal temperature to match the temperature outside. Pretty cool, don’t you think?
