Home Remedies To Cure Dry Flaky Scalp

By  |

Dry flaky scalp causes a lot of irritation as well as embarrassment when you are in public. They also cause a lot of discomfort and hair loss. It makes the head itchy and scratching it in front of people might draw a lot of attention and questioning stares. In adults, itchy scalp is a common condition that occurs from time to time. It might be due to a skin condition like psoriasis or might come on due to temporary reasons like poor hygiene and diet.

Treating your itchy scalp can be as easy as picking up a bottle of anti-dandruff shampoo. But many of these shampoos contain potentially harmful ingredients and do not necessarily treat the underlying cause of the dandruff. But luckily, you have more options. Try these home remedies to naturally treat your dry, itchy scalp.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties which help to kill the virus and yeast that causes itchy scalp. It also balances the pH levels of the scalp to clear the itchiness. The good part is that it does not require much effort. Pour the apple cider vinegar in a bowl, enough to rub it on your scalp. Take a small ball of cotton and dip it into the apple cider vinegar. Rub this piece of cotton on your scalp and make sure that you rub it all over your scalp. Wait for 15 minutes and then wash it off. You can do this once in every 2 weeks.

Tea tree oil, with its powerful natural anti-fungal, anti-inflammation and antibacterial properties, can be used to treat itchy scalp. You can add 10 to 20 drops of tea tree oil to one-half cup of baby shampoo and use it daily until the condition of your scalp improves. The other option is to dilute two or three drops of tea tree oil in one tablespoon of vegetable oil and massage the mixture onto your scalp. With regular use, this remedy will heal a dry, itchy scalp within a week or two.

Lemon juice will help treat an itchy and dry scalp because of its antiseptic properties. It is particularly useful when dealing with dandruff. Apply fresh lemon juice thoroughly on the scalp. Leave it on for five minutes and then shampoo your hair. If you do not have dandruff, dilute the lemon juice in water. Alternately, you can mix lemon juice with yogurt and apply it on your scalp for a few minutes before washing your hair with a mild shampoo. Repeat at least daily until itchiness and dryness disappears.

This may sound a little disgusting but egg and yogurt can do wonders for your scalp. It helps in treating your dry flaky scalp which in turn saves you from an itchy head. It also provides shine and nourishment to the hair. Break one egg in a bowl and add 2 tablespoon of plain yogurt to it. Mix it well until a thick paste is formed and apply it on your scalp. Make sure that the mixture covers your scalp completely and the left over paste can be applied to the rest of your hair. Leave it for 1 hour and wash it off with a shampoo. Do it once in 2 weeks so they do not return.
